In addition to The Retreat spaces, suite passengers also get exclusive access to the restaurant Luminae, open for breakfast and dinner every day. It takes up a solid chunk of prime real estate at the front of the ship, on decks 15 and 16. The most gasp-worthy area is the gorgeous sundeck, replete with sunbeds, cabanas, loungers and rocking chairs. Sun-lovers and shade-seekers will find their spot no matter the time of day, thanks to the myriad nooks and crannies throughout. Complimentary dining includes Eden Cafe, for casual daytime eats in a bright, vibrant space; the spa cafe; the Oceanview Cafe, for just that — stellar ocean views; and Mast Grill, for casual, poolside bites. When it comes to staterooms aboard Celebrity Apex, don’t expect traditional dark and dingy cruise ship staterooms that you might be more used to on older ships from well-established cruise lines.

There are no waterparks or waterslides on Apex, which helps to keep the atmosphere calm and scream-free.

This time I’d be travelling on Celebrity Apex, the newest ship in their fleet, to Greece and Croatia. One of the Edge Series ships, she’s a radical departure from Celebrity’s previous ships. Celebrity Apex may not have the largest slide, the biggest room count, or challenge-inducing surf lessons or race cars, but it does take cruising to the next level in its own sophisticated way. Celebrity is zeroed in on a no-waste footprint, and on my ship, 85% of the waste is recycled or reused. The Edge class of ships uses 20% less fuel than older ships, and Celebrity Apex is part of a trial that uses a biofuel blend (using oils and fats with fuel) to reduce carbon emissions.

CELEBRITY APEX DECK PLANS

The online event was held on March 27th and attended by Dimitris Kafetzis (cruise ship's Captain), Lisa Lutoff Perlo (Celebrity Cruises' CEO) and Laurent Castaing (shipbuilder's General Manager). Celebrity Apex Inaugural Cruise was re-scheduled for May 20th (initially planned for April 1st). Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Celebrity rescheduled Apex ship's inaugural cruise (2020) several times - April 1st, May 20, June 13, September 16, October 10, November 5, and December 5th.

Constructed at Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France,[8] she is the second vessel in the company's Edge class of ships, following the delivery of her sister ship, Celebrity Edge, in 2018. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, her debut sailing was from Athens on June 19, 2021 to the Greek Islands. Self-testing is acceptable on cruises leaving the U.S. and some European ports. For sailings nine nights or fewer, vaccinated guests will no longer need to test to board (destination-specific protocols remain in place), but for sailings of 10 nights or longer, passengers must test 3 days prior to embarkation. Artwork displayed on the ship is world class, and guests can even opt in for a guided Art & Design tour.

While many cruise lines are constantly trying to build the next biggest thing as they release new ships, that’s not what Celebrity has done here. Children are welcome on board, but the focus on luxury rather than high-adrenaline features like waterslides and climbing walls means Celebrity isn’t the the most family-focused cruise line. They do have a Camp at Sea kids club with activities from toddlers to teens. And as Celebrity Apex’s ‘godmother’ is Reshma Saujani, founder of Girls Who Code, there’s a focus on science, engineering and technology in the activities. At the moment, Celebrity ships are running at well below normal capacity – our sailing had only just over 800 passengers and 900 crew.

Celebrity Apex was originally scheduled to set sail in March 2020, debuting in Southhampton, complete with passengers, but the ship’s Caribbean sailings were put off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Thanks for spending so much time talking about the small details that can make or break a cruise. This'll be cruise #49 for us...and your review of Apex makes us more anxious than ever to experience the newness of this ship. All adult passengers and crew on Celebrity Cruises sailings have to be fully vaccinated.

Cruise travel: How to minimise your environmental impact

It’s got a real jungle feel with giant vegetation and shades of green, and there’s a spiral walkway running around the edge with lots of tucked away seating areas where you can curl up with a book. Celebrity are known for their ‘modern luxury’ style – more luxurious hotel than floating mega resort – so it’s no surprise that Apex isn’t trying to compete to be the biggest ship around. With 16 decks, 2910 passengers and 1319 crew, she’s dwarfed by the giants of cruising – Symphony of the Seas holds 5500 passengers. But that’s no bad thing, the ship feels manageable, there are more intimate spaces… and you shouldn’t get too lost. With a perfect view from any seat, The Theatre introduces all-new production shows and programming exclusive to Celebrity Apex and brought to life through state-of-the-art technology designed, engineered, and built by Tait. A new 20-foot-tall 4K LED screen comprised of 17 million pixels curves 110 feet around the stage to immerse you like never before.

About Celebrity Apex

The ceremony was attended by Lisa Lutoff-Perlo (Celebrity Cruises President and CEO), accompanied by her management team, and Laurent Castaing (shipyard's General Manager). The Celebrity ship Apex introduces new dining menus developed by Cornelius Gallagher (3-star Michelin chef). Also new is the fleet's first Craft Social Bar - selling premium wines (by the glass), a large selection of craft cocktails and 50+ craft beers (including several rare brands). The sports facilities are complimentary, including the pickleball equipment (net, paddles, balls) but operated with separate scheduled playing times for adults and families (with kids older than 6). While on older vessels the pickleball courts are either on the Sports Deck or at the Multi-Sports Court, on the EGDE ships pickleball is played at the Rooftop Garden.

Cruise Hive was established back in 2008 and among the earliest blogs in the industry. Since the start, it's been our aim to provide the latest cruise news covering all the major cruise lines. We make sure cruisers are fully prepared for their cruise vacation with tips on ships and ports.Millions of travelers rely on Cruise Hive in the United States, Europe, Australia, and around the world. Edge-class ships purportedly cost $1 billion each, though Celebrity Beyond will certainly cost more, as the ship is planned to be about 10,000 GT larger than its siblings.

As the most discerning, up-to-the-minute voice in all things travel, Condé Nast Traveler is the global citizen’s bible and muse, offering both inspiration and vital intel. We understand that time is the greatest luxury, which is why Condé Nast Traveler mines its network of experts and influencers so that you never waste a meal, a drink, or a hotel stay wherever you are in the world. The godmother of Apex is the founder of Girls Who Code, which is focused on empowering young girls to follow their passions, especially in the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).

I was impressed with the STEM programming available for kids on the ship. Celebrity also has an Autism Friendly Certification from Autism on the Seas. In September 2018 was announced that the ship will be christened in Southampton England.

Celebrity Apex offers 16 guest decks over its 1,004 feet of length and gross tonnage of 130,818 GT. It offers a maximum capacity for 3,405 guests, though that number is 2,910 at double occupancy, and holds a crew of 1,320 individuals. All this considered, Celebrity Apex is not notable for its size. While many cruise lines are constantly trying to build the next biggest thing as they release new ships, that’s not what Celebrity has done here. In fact, Celebrity Apex and Celebrity Edge both tie for the 50th-largest cruise ships in the world currently — hardly anything groundbreaking. One of the best innovations on Edge Class ships is splitting the main dining room into four separate spaces – each with a different theme. Normandie (French), Tuscan (Italian), Cyprus (Greek) and Cosmopolitan (American) serve the same daily menu but also have their own speciality dishes.

No, instead of focusing on overall sheer size of the ships, Celebrity focused on modern amenities and luxurious experiences when it came to Celebrity Apex. So, if you’re looking for the biggest and grandest cruise ship, this one is not for you; however, if it’s modern luxury you’re after, keep reading. As on previous Celebrity sailings, the restaurant staff were great at flagging what I could eat as I’m gluten-free, and adapting things where necessary. You can also mix and match – have two starters or mains (entrees in US parlance). The only problem is with seven nights there’s not enough mealtimes to try out all the different dining options.
